Description from the public health department of Madison and Dane County:
This proposed legislative action is designed to prevent and remediate PFAS pollution in Wisconsin communities. Specifically, this bill requires the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to establish acceptable levels and standards, monitoring requirements, and required response action of PFAS contamination in drinking water, ground water, surface water, air, solid waste, beds of navigable waters, and soil and sediment if levels of PFAS are deemed potentially harmful to human health or the environment. Currently, this legislation would include PFOA and PFOS but also perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS), and perfluroheptanoic acid (PFHpA). This list of PFAS contaminants could be expanded if other individual PFAS chemicals are determined to have a reasonable probability of entering groundwater resources and there is sufficient evidence for a potential public health risk.
